Bengaluru: Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the government was preparing comprehensive plans for the development of Bengaluru over the next 10 to 15 years.

Shivakumar was speaking at a meeting of the advisory committee on the economic development of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region at his official residence, Krishna, on Monday. “The state has set a target of taking its economy to $1 trillion by 2047. A plan has also been prepared to take the state economy to $400-420 billion by 2037. In line with this objective, a blueprint is being prepared for better transportation, housing and industrial development in the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR). Nine new integrated industrial townships need to be developed in the BMR,” he said.

“Land measuring 7,900 acres has already been acquired, while the acquisition process for another 5,600 acres is under way. Our government has already announced the establishment of an AI City, which should be developed on the lines of Punggol in Singapore. Land will also be required to establish an AI university, and suitable locations should be identified,” he said.

Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said that, as decided at the previous meeting, the government intended to bring the entire Bengaluru Urban district under the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to facilitate phased development of drinking water and underground drainage systems.“This will enable us to systematically develop water distribution capacity and sewerage infrastructure across the district. Along with this, steps will be taken to identify the entire road network in the district and prepare plans for its development,” he said.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said all areas of Bengaluru Urban district would also be brought under the jurisdiction of urban local bodies. A comprehensive transportation plan has been prepared to ensure smooth traffic movement in Bengaluru and its outskirts. The government plans to expand Metro connectivity by an additional 312 km by 2037.

The meeting also discussed plans for an additional 72 km of suburban rail connectivity, construction of a 210-km additional ring road connecting 10 hubs, and a proposal to connect Phase 2 of the Peripheral Ring Road with NICE Road. V iews were also expressed on constructing a 270-km Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor connecting the Bengaluru-Tumakuru, Bengaluru-Mysuru and Bengaluru-KGF corridors, as well as extending the proposed Mumbai-Bengaluru high-speed rail link up to Mysuru.

The BMR is expected to require 3,600 MLD of water by 2037. The meeting discussed plans to meet the drinking water and industrial water requirements of the region. The Chief Minister directed officials to give priority over the next 10 years to projects aimed at meeting the city’s drinking water and industrial requirements, including reuse of treated water and filling of lakes.

“Providing affordable housing for everyone is our commitment. In this direction, a plan has been prepared to construct 6 to 6.5 lakh houses. Of these, housing facilities will be provided to 40,000 to 50,000 workers employed in industries,” the government said.
