Congress names 25 MLAs for corporation, board posts
Bengaluru: The Congress has finalised the names of 25 MLAs for appointment as chairpersons of major corporations and boards in Karnataka and is awaiting the Election Commission’s approval in view of the model code of conduct for the Legislative Council elections.
Official orders are expected to be issued once the Election Commission gives its consent. After the appointment orders for the MLAs are issued, the party is likely to nominate senior leaders to other corporation and board positions. The appointments are expected to be taken up largely after the restructuring of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). With a series of elections, including Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat polls, expected ahead, the Congress is also undertaking an organisational revamp. Along with changes in office-bearers and the formation of a new executive committee, the process of setting up a Political Affairs Committee to improve coordination between the party and the government has also begun. There is growing pressure within the ruling party for the Political Affairs Committee to be formed so that major policy decisions can be discussed on the party platform in advance. The move is aimed at ensuring that government decisions remain aligned with the party’s stated positions and preventing unilateral decisions.
Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president B K Hariprasad are learnt to have pressed for the committee to be formed at the earliest. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, who met Rahul Gandhi in Delhi recently, has also reportedly raised the issue with the party leadership.
The committee is being planned along the lines of similar panels in Congress-ruled states. A 10-member Group of Ministers has already been formed at the government level, while a Political Affairs Committee comprising representatives of both the party and government is expected to be constituted soon.
Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is scheduled to travel to Delhi on October 6 for a two-day visit, during which he will attend a GST meeting and meet senior AICC leaders. A decision on the committee’s formation is expected during the visit, party sources said.
The KPCC is also preparing to constitute an executive committee of around 25 to 30 members, along with changes in office-bearers and appointments to various frontal organisations. The restructuring is expected to continue as the party prepares for upcoming local-body elections.
