Bengaluru: Karnataka has collected around ₹1.10 lakh crore in revenue from liquor over the past three years, with excise earnings continuing to rise year after year. The state has set an ambitious revenue target of ₹45,000 crore for the Excise Department for the 2026-27 financial year.

Liquor sales remain a major source of revenue for the state government. The department has already collected close to half of its annual target in the first six months of the current financial year. With the festive season beginning, revenue is expected to increase further. Meanwhile, there have been demands to permit online liquor sales in the state, but the proposal has not received approval so far.

The government has also approved the expansion of liquor retail outlets operated by the Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL). The plan provides for 352 licences, with at least two outlets in each taluk, and another 58 licences, with two outlets for each district headquarters. Additional locations may be considered based on MSIL’s regional demand assessment. In addition, the government has approved 900 additional CL (11-C) licences for MSIL outlets across Karnataka. Of these, 880 licences have been earmarked for the state’s 220 Assembly constituencies, at four per constituency. The remaining 20 licences are allocated to Yadgir district’s four constituencies, at five each.

Licences will be granted for locations that meet the prescribed requirements and are free of objections, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Karnataka Excise (Sale of Indian and Foreign Liquors) Rules, 1968, and the Karnataka Excise (General Conditions of Licences) Rules, 1967.
