Karnataka postal dept sells 8,000 philately passports in two days
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Postal Circle’s Philately Passport initiative has received an enthusiastic response, with 8,000 booklets sold across the state in just two days during the National Postal Week celebrations.
The passport-style booklet, which has attracted considerable interest among young people and travel enthusiasts, features brief information about 100 tourist destinations in Karnataka. Priced at ₹600, the Philately Passport offers buyers an opportunity to explore all 100 destinations within 100 days. At each location, visitors must go to the designated post office and purchase a postage stamp to receive a special pictorial cancellation featuring the local historical site, along with the date of the visit.
Those who complete the journey and collect the cancellations for all 100 destinations within the stipulated period will also be felicitated. The booklets were sold at selected major post offices, including Bengaluru General Post Office (GPO), Mysuru, Belagavi and Mangaluru. This is the third edition of the initiative.
Karnataka Postal Circle Director Sandesh Mahadevappa said the response had been encouraging and that more copies would be made available next year, depending on demand.
He described the passport as a travel companion designed to encourage people to explore the state. The initiative aims to combine travel documentation with an emotional connection to Karnataka’s heritage and destinations.
The opportunity to collect unique post office cancellations from 100 locations has helped make the blue booklet popular among young customers and travel enthusiasts, with buyers reportedly queuing for hours at post offices to obtain a copy.
