Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta said that a High Court bench must be established in Mangaluru, now growing as a major city of the state after Bengaluru, and that the city will gain further weight from it.

He spoke on Saturday at a consultation held in a private hotel in Mangaluru, after a judges’ committee was constituted to look into the possibility of a High Court bench. He said that the fight should become a public demand rather than remain confined to advocates.

“The way justice was secured when Mangaluru’s railway region was attached from Palakkad to the Mysuru division, the High Court bench demand for Mangaluru should likewise be fulfilled. Collection of views at taluk level is also required to support it,” he said.

Speakers included MLA Vedavyas Kamath, former Rajya Sabha member B Ibrahim, former minister B Nagaraj Shetty, former Legislative Council member Monappa Bhandary, advocates’ association president Jagadish Shenava, struggle committee PRO M P Noronha and former advocates’ association president H V Raghavendra.

Lawyers and prominent figures from various associations participated. Sridhar Shetty gave the vote of thanks. Jagadish K R managed the programme.
