Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is making preparations to construct a new High Court building on the premises of the Bangalore Turf Club (Racecourse), and the foundation stone will be laid soon, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has said.
Speaking at the 34th convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the proposal would receive formal approval at the next Cabinet meeting. “We have already held discussions with the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. A well-equipped new High Court complex will come up on around 12 to 15 acres of land at the Racecourse premises. The foundation stone will be laid before the tenure of the incumbent Chief Justice of India comes to an end,” Shivakumar said.
Recalling the historical relationship between the legislature and the judiciary in Karnataka, he said the state was unique in having the two institutions located opposite each other. “In the past, Assembly sessions were held on the very premises where the High Court is currently functioning,” he recalled.
The Chief Minister also assured that the government would give greater importance to legal education in the state. He announced that a dedicated training institute would be established to help law graduates prepare for judicial service examinations. The government would also support the establishment of a ‘Startup Law Clinic’ on the NLSIU campus to provide legal guidance to young entrepreneurs, he said.
On the occasion, the foundation stones were laid for several infrastructure projects on the university campus, including the South Block, a 750-seat auditorium, a dining hall with a capacity of 800 people, and a student centre.
