Bengaluru: Department of Economics of Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University celeberated the 94th birth anniversary of the late former Prime Minister and internationally renowned economist Dr. Manmohan Singh was meaningfully at the Jnana Jyothi Auditorium in the Central College campus.
Chief Guest, Prof. Krishnaraj, Senior Professor at the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), strongly advocated that the posthumous Bharat Ratna honour should be conferred on Dr. Manmohan Singh, who led India, which was submerged in a serious economic crisis, towards tremendous progress through revolutionary reforms.
Prof. Krishnaraj analyzed that as a result of the Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization policy implemented by him as the Union Finance Minister in 1991, India has today emerged as the fastest-growing and strongest economy in the world.
He explained that Dr. Manmohan Singh laid a solid foundation for the sustainable development of the country through many important legislations such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), Right to Education, and Right to Information.
Prof. Krishnaraj said that the life story of Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was a great person of simplicity, gentility, honesty, gentle nature and lofty ideals, is an open book and he was always open to media and public criticism.
Presiding over the function, Vice Chancellor Prof. Ramesh B. announced that the newly established Dr. Manmohan Singh Study Centre in the University will start functioning soon.
He recalled that Dr. Manmohan Singh, who also served as the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has made invaluable contributions to the expansion and quality improvement of higher education.
Prof. Ramesh B. opined that Dr. Manmohan Singh helped children of weaker sections and girl children to get higher education by giving special emphasis to the empowerment and infrastructure development of public universities, thereby significantly increasing the overall Gross Enrolment Ratio.
Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. Ramesh B. Kudenatti, Deans Prof. Jyothi Venkatesh, Prof. K.R. Jalaja, Prof. M. Nirmala and members of the Syndicate and Academic Council of the University were present. Prof. Ritika Sinha delivered the introductory speech. Dr. Deeksha S. compered the programme.
As part of the function, prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of various talent competitions organized for the students.
