Bengaluru: FormerChief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has traditionally been known for his interventions and outspoken style in the legislature, has largely maintained silence in the Assembly after stepping down as Chief Minister. His approach during the ongoing special session on drought and the Kasturirangan report has led to discussions within both the Opposition and the ruling Congress.
Former CM Siddaramaiah attended the monsoon session after initially being absent, but did not participate in debates despite Opposition members targeting the government on several issues. He also remained largely silent during protests demanding the resignation of B. Nagendra in connection with the Valmiki Corporation-related controversy.
The former Chief Minister is now attending the special session being held to discuss drought and the Kasturirangan report. In the past, Siddaramaiah frequently countered Opposition arguments by citing figures and government records. Even when he served as Leader of the Opposition, he was known for detailed interventions in the House. However, since losing the Chief Minister’s post, he has not been actively participating in Assembly debates.
Siddaramaiah has been sitting in the last row of the Assembly. Ministers, legislators and, on some occasions, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar have gone over to speak to him. K.N. Rajanna, who generally sits beside Siddaramaiah, has also largely stayed away from debates during the session.
His silence became a talking point during Wednesday’s uproar over MLA Yashavantharayagowda Patil’s resignation. As the ruling party and Opposition exchanged heated remarks, BJP Deputy Leader in the Assembly Aravind Bellad took a dig at Siddaramaiah. “The only person enjoying all these developments is Siddaramaiah. He is watching everything and enjoying it without saying anything,” Bellad said.
Siddaramaiah did not respond to Bellad’s remarks and was seen smiling from his seat. During the discussion over Yashavantharayagowda Patil’s resignation, Siddaramaiah and Rajanna were also seen speaking to each other. The two were seen smiling and conversing, with Siddaramaiah responding to Rajanna with hand gestures.
Siddaramaiah’s continued silence has consequently become a subject of political discussion. While he continues to attend party meetings and programmes, his participation in legislative proceedings has noticeably reduced after he stepped down as Chief Minister. Within political circles, different interpretations are being discussed about the reason for his subdued presence.
Some are questioning whether developments surrounding the leadership issue and the role of his close associates have influenced his current approach, while others believe there could be other reasons behind his decision to remain largely silent. However, there has been no public statement from Siddaramaiah explaining the reason for his current approach.
