Underlying causes of MLAs joining TVK must be investigated: DMK
Chennai:DMK leader T K S Elangovan on Friday alleged that the underlying causes of the recent wave of MLAs resigning from their posts to join the TVK must be strictly investigated. His remarks came hours after the Madras High Court postponed the pronouncement of its verdict regarding the petitions challenging the Assembly Speaker’s decision to accept the resignations of the six AIADMK MLAs.
Legislators Maragatham Kumaravel, P Sathyabama, Isakki Subbiah, Jayakumar, M R Vijayabhaskar, and C Vijayabaskar originally faced disqualification proceedings for defying the party whip and voting in favour of the TVK government during a trust vote. Speaking to PTI Videos, Elangovan said, “If the resignation was pressurised by the ruling party, then the Speaker, even though he can accept the resignation, the rule says that they cannot contest in elections for six years.”
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visits to Chennai, the DMK spokesperson dismissed any political equivalence. He clarified that the PM’s arrival (October 11) was strictly for an official government function to inaugurate a new metro route, whereas Gandhi (October 10) was visiting on a political invitation from the Congress party. Elangovan also strongly countered the AIADMK’s accusations that the DMK was “hijacking” credit for welfare and development projects.
He asserted that significant infrastructure advancements, including numerous bridges across Chennai, were achieved during the DMK’s governance. He credited the DMK period with elevating Tamil Nadu’s GDP ranking from seventh to second place nationally, while accusing the AIADMK of being subservient to the BJP.
Pointing to the recent GST Council meeting in Delhi, Elangovan criticised the Union government’s use of Hindi-only placards, stating that leaders who fear the BJP consistently fail to raise their voices against such linguistic imposition.
