Guntur: District collector CM Sai Kanth Varma urged people to remain alert in view of Cyclone Arnab, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds on Wednesday. He requested people to avoid going outdoors unless very important or inevitable.

He addressed the media at the Collectorate here on Tuesday to explain the precautionary measures being taken in view of the cyclone. He announced that a holiday had been declared for all educational institutions on Wednesday. Anganwadi centres had already been ordered to remain closed for three days.

He said low-lying areas had been identified, and people would be shifted immediately to the 34 relief camps already prepared, if necessary. He said special care would be taken of elderly people, children, and pregnant women. He said the Water Resources Department was continuously monitoring water levels at Prakasam Barrage and the flow of various streams.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Departments had been instructed to alert farmers and provide them with necessary advice and guidance in view of the cyclone. A control room had been set up at the Collectorate, with the helpline number 0863-2234014.

Staff had been deployed to monitor the situation round-the-clock.
