BRS leader seeks continuous voter enrolment drive

Vinod Kumar urges ECI to protect voting rights of eligible citizens missing from draft electoral rolls

Hyderabad: BRS senior leader Vinod Kumar has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to make the special voter enrolment drive a continuous process and ensure that all eligible citizens are granted their right to vote.
Vinod Kumar said that, as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, a critical responsibility was to identify individuals who had previously been registered as voters but whose names were missing from the draft electoral rolls, and verify their eligibility. He stressed that the actual status of every excluded name must be verified at the field level.
While it was necessary to identify and remove the names of deceased persons, those who had permanently migrated and voters with duplicate registrations in accordance with established regulations, it was equally important to ensure that the voting rights of eligible citizens were not compromised because of their temporary absence from home or relocation for employment or other personal reasons.
He said the special camps scheduled for October 15 and 16 offered an important opportunity not only for new voter registration but also for eligible citizens whose names were missing from the draft electoral rolls to get themselves enrolled.
Vinod Kumar urged every Booth Level Agent (BLA) representing a recognised political party to thoroughly examine the electoral roll for the polling station under their jurisdiction and identify previously registered voters whose names were missing. Besides facilitating the registration of eligible youth, BLAs should help people correct errors relating to names, addresses and other details in the electoral rolls.
He also called for greater awareness of the voter registration process among specific groups and urged Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and BLAs to work in coordination to assist all eligible voters.
Stressing the need for transparency in the process, Vinod Kumar said the right to vote was the foundation of democracy and that the exercise could not be considered complete until every eligible citizen’s name was included in the electoral roll.
