Hyderabad: BJP National Vice-President Ram Madhav on Thursday accused the Congress of spreading false propaganda over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to malign India's democratic institutions. He said the Congress was unable to accept its electoral defeats and was resorting to allegations of EVM manipulation, vote chori and bias against the Election Commission.

Addressing the media, he said SIR was not an initiative of the Modi government and had been part of the electoral process since 1952. The Election Commission had taken up the exercise after a gap of nearly 20 years, and there was nothing wrong with it, he said.

Rejecting the Congress claim that 13 crore names had been deleted from electoral rolls, Ram Madhav asked why the party was worried about removing the names of deceased persons, relocated voters, duplicate entries and illegal immigrants. He alleged that Congress had relied on illegal immigrants' votes to win elections and was therefore opposing the SIR exercise.

He also accused former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi of undermining democracy, while asserting that the BJP won elections with people's support.

Without naming BRS chief and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, he described the main opposition party in Telangana as an 'iron leg'. He recalled the former Chief Minister's attempts to build a Third Front by meeting leaders such as Mamata Banerjee, Naveen Patnaik and YS Jaganmohan Reddy, claiming that all of them subsequently suffered electoral defeats.

Targeting the Congress leadership, he alleged that Rahul Gandhi spent much of his time abroad while Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy focused on Delhi visits instead of governance.

Ram Madhav said the BJP would expose the Congress government's alleged corruption and failures and expressed confidence that the BJP would form the next government in Telangana. Earlier, BJP state president N Ramchander Rao felicitated him on his first visit after assuming charge as national vice-president.
