GHMC gears up for massive Ganesh idol immersion with extensive citywide arrangements

Hyderabad: To ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the Ganesh festival, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, in coordination with various line departments, has stepped up arrangements across the city for the grand Ganesh immersion scheduled for Friday. GHMC has identified 39 lakes and ponds across its six zones, including Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Charminar, Golconda, Khairtabad, and Secunderabad. Official estimates indicate 77,687 Ganesh idols will undergo immersion, comprising 52,158 idols up to five feet and 25,529 idols exceeding five feet.
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan stated that the civic body is arranging 110 static cranes and 170 mobile cranes at baby ponds and major lakes to facilitate the process. Dedicated staff have been posted across 12 joint control rooms alongside police personnel to monitor festivities. For sanitation management, GHMC established 136 Ganesh Action Teams covering every three to four kilometres along procession routes. Each team consists of one sanitary supervisor, three field assistants, and 21 workers. Additionally, 770 sanitation workers will remain deployed round the clock at immersion sites, while 6,000 sweeping staff work alongside action teams to clear waste.
Garbage will be collected and cleared continuously using 42 mini tippers and 10 JCBs alongside the standard municipal fleet, supported by 215 engineering maintenance works. Major roads leading to pandals and temples are being cleared of debris daily, and 287 mobile toilets have been installed around immersion points and procession paths. The civic body previously distributed 4.91 lakh litter trash bags alongside 1.45 lakh free clay Ganesh idols.
To improve night visibility, authorities set up 43,270 temporary lighting arrangements across lakes, baby ponds, and approach roads, conducting regular inspections to ensure full functionality. GHMC also held convergence meetings and distributed 500 operational booklets detailing action plans to ensure seamless inter-departmental coordination.
