GHMC woman Mayor: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) region will have a woman as its Mayor for the next term as for the first time the post has been reserved exclusively for a woman. The post will be taken up by a woman corporator in the general category. Prior to this, it was reserved for the backward classes.

So far, only three women have served as mayors of the GHMC. The ensuing mayor will be the fourth woman to hold the post. Rani Kumudini Devi (in 1962), Sarojini Pulla Reddy (in 1965) and Banda Karthika Reddy (in 2009) have served as GHMC mayors.

Unanimously elected first woman Mayor Rani Kumudini Devi was born to Pingle Venaktaramana Reddy, former Deputy Prime Minister of Hyderabad in Warangal district. The city had faced one of its worst floods in 1962, demanding the time and attention of the civic authorities.

After GHMC was formed in the year 2007, the first elections were held in 2009. Congress Party's Banda Karthika Reddy was made the Mayor. The first time corporator from Tarnaka was declared elected as no other candidate's name was proposed by any party.

And this GHMC elections will be deciding the fourth woman mayor of GHMC. In this election, many seats are reserved for the women to contest.
