Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has taken steps to protect two water bodies in Rangareddy district — Istaribai Kunta in Kuntloor and Kudikunta in Kondapur by removing encroachments and installing fencing around vulnerable areas.

According to HYDRAA, in Kuntloor village of Abdullapurmet mandal, the officials removed a compound wall that had allegedly been constructed after encroaching into Istaribai Kunta on Thursday. The water body is spread across about 2.5 acres in Survey No. 248, which also includes government land. The tank has been identified by the Irrigation Department as well as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority.

While private properties and real-estate ventures have come up adjacent to the survey number, HYDRAA officials found that a compound wall had extended into the tank area and removed it. HYDRAA also stopped attempts to extend a layout into the water body and sell the encroached portion as plots. HYDRAA further removed sheds constructed near the tank bund by operators of an RMC plant for their workers, after determining that the structures fell within the tank’s buffer zone. To prevent future encroachments, the agency also installed fencing around the water body.

Moreover, HYDRAA has also protected a portion of Kudikunta in Kondapur village of Serilingampally mandal. The lake covers approximately eight acres and has already been developed by the Society for Advancement of Human Endeavour (SAHE).

Adjacent to the lake is a 300-square-yard parcel of land that falls within the tank’s limits. Since the portion does not currently hold water, some local residents had allegedly been attempting to occupy it.

Residents had approached HYDRAA with a request to protect the vacant area, citing alleged anti-social activities there and seeking the installation of fencing to prevent unauthorised access.

Following a field inspection, officials determined that the 300-square-yard parcel formed part of the Kudikunta land. HYDRAA subsequently installed fencing around the area to protect it from encroachment.
