HYDRAA revs up Kapra Lake restoration works as farmers pitch in with land offer
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency accelerated restoration work at Kapra Lake, aiming to revive its ecological significance, protect biodiversity, and restore its natural habitat for migratory birds.
Local farmers voluntarily handed over approximately 70 acres falling within the full tank level boundary to support lake development, with the entire rejuvenation project being executed at an estimated cost of Rs 35 crore. Recognized by the Central Government as an important wetland, Kapra Lake was historically a thriving natural ecosystem supporting varied bird species and aquatic life.
The agency is proceeding with the project to restore the natural ecosystem, which covers approximately 112.80 acres within its full tank level boundary. According to official reports, nearly 60 per cent of total restoration work has been completed.
Agency Commissioner AV Ranganath stated that inspired by ongoing lake development initiatives, local farmers agreed to surrender land to facilitate environmental revival. The wetland ecosystem serves as a vital habitat for more than 470 migratory bird species arriving from various parts of the world, including Australia and Europe. Beyond storing water, the wetland offers a natural sanctuary for birds, aquatic organisms, and indigenous vegetation, making its conservation essential for urban biodiversity.
Recognising this ecological significance, the agency is prioritizing environmental protection alongside urban beautification, aiming to preserve long-term ecological value. Ongoing civil works include comprehensive lake desilting, increasing depth to improve water storage capacity, and strengthening inlet and outlet systems to regulate rainwater flow.
In addition to ecological restoration, officials are constructing amenities to benefit local residents. Proposed public infrastructure includes a walking track around the water body, robust protective fencing, and upgraded hydrological channels. Once fully restored, Kapra Lake is expected to reconnect with surrounding communities, providing residents with dedicated spaces for morning walks, evening recreation, and relaxation amid natural surroundings.
