HYDRAA’s lake revival brings festive cheer to women
Hyderabad: Lakes developed and rejuvenated by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) have emerged as vibrant venues for Bathukamma celebrations, bringing festive cheer to women across Hyderabad.
As part of the festivities, large numbers of women gathered around these water bodies to perform traditional Bathukamma dances and immerse their beautifully arranged floral stacks amid a joyful atmosphere.
The celebrations took place at several lakes, including Kukatpally Nalla Cheruvu, IDL Lake in Kukatpally, Sunnam Cheruvu in Madhapur, Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet and Nallakunta Lake in Uppal. These locations witnessed enthusiastic participation as women celebrated Telangana’s iconic floral festival in clean and welcoming surroundings.
At Kukatpally Nalla Cheruvu, the baby pond has been filled with water to facilitate Bathukamma immersions. At the nearby IDL Lake, women gathered around a specially excavated pond designated for Ganesh idol immersions. Traditional Bathukamma songs and dances added to the festive atmosphere.
Similar scenes were witnessed at Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet and Nallakunta Lake in Uppal, where women came together to celebrate the occasion with great enthusiasm.
HYDRAA’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) personnel supervised the arrangements at Kukatpally Nalla Cheruvu and assisted women with the immersion of their Bathukammas. They also monitored the proceedings to ensure that the celebrations took place smoothly and without inconvenience.
According to HYDRAA, the initiative provided considerable relief to women at a time when insufficient rainfall, partly attributed to El Niño conditions, had left several lakes with low water levels. Special arrangements at the agency’s developed lakes enabled women to celebrate Bathukamma near water bodies and maintain their connection with tradition.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath said that, in the past, many lakes lacked suitable surroundings for women to gather and perform Bathukamma dances, limiting celebrations largely to the immersion of floral arrangements. The lakes developed by HYDRAA now serve as dedicated venues for the festival, enabling women to enjoy the festivities, preserve their cultural traditions and strengthen community bonds.
Other lakes that received attention include Lingam Cheruvu and Doolapally Lake in Quthbullapur; Gopi Cheruvu in Lingampally; Gurnath Cheruvu, Pale Cheruvu and Maisamma Kunta in Miyapur; Bathukamma Kunta and Mansoorabad Lake in Hayathnagar; and Saroornagar Lake.
Women expressed happiness over the improved surroundings and the opportunity to perform Bathukamma dances beside the lakes.
They said celebrating the festival near water bodies brought them immense joy and strengthened the traditional bond between Bathukamma, nature and water.
