Hyderabad: BRS Working President KTR on Thursday questioned the functioning of the Election Commission of India amid reported objections raised by two of the three Election Commissioners regarding decisions on voter registration, deletion, and restoration. In a statement issued here, the BRS leader stated that while India calls itself the world's largest democracy, the institution meant to safeguard democracy is turning almost autocratic.
Referring to reported internal differences within the three-member commission, he questioned the core principle of majority decision-making, noting that two out of three constitutes a majority, though that definition appears to be changing now. KTR stated that the fact that two Election Commissioners were repeatedly raising objections warrants immediate scrutiny of the poll panel. He stressed that when majority members within the commission raise concerns, it is time to reform the institution. Questioning how decisions concerning electoral rolls were being pushed through, he asked whether democratic principles were being compromised. Asserting that the nation's democratic future cannot be left to an institution whose foundations are eroding, KTR appealed to political parties, constitutional bodies, citizen forums, and the Supreme Court of India to unite to save what remains of democracy.
In a separate post focusing on state politics, KTR stated he was not surprised that the highest voter deletions in Telangana occurred in BRS-won constituencies. Describing the political contest in the state as KCR against all, he alleged that Congress and BJP had formed an unholy, illicit, and undeclared alliance to defeat BRS, claiming the Election Commission now appeared to be joining that nexus. KTR asserted that BRS would fight the issue in courts and among the public, promising that every illegally deleted vote would be restored. Reaffirming his message on electoral roll revisions, he declared that there is only one SIR in Telangana KCR Sir and no SIR can diminish the love people have for him.
