Hyderabad: Citizens travelling by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGRTC) buses are facing considerable inconvenience due to the frequent shifting of bus stops at several locations, and that too, amid lack of clearly visible and properly marked bus stop facilities across the city.
According to commuters, bus stops are often shifted without public information, leaving passengers confused about where to wait for buses. On several busy routes, the absence of prominent boards indicating bus stops makes it all the more difficult for passengers to identify the designated stopping points, particularly during peak hours.
One of the major concerns raised by commuters is on the Punjagutta–Begumpet route, where the bus stop that was earlier located before the Punjagutta junction has been shifted to a point beyond the traffic signal. Passengers say the change has created a serious safety concern as those wanting to board buses now have to cross a busy stretch of traffic after the signal.
Venkteshwarlu, a commuter, said: “Earlier, the bus would stop before the Punjagutta junction, which was convenient and safer. Now, the stop has been shifted to a point beyond the signal. To catch the bus, pedestrians have to cross the very busy road, which is dangerous, especially during peak traffic.”
“Especially women face severe hardship in crossing the major junction,” he added.
Srikanth, a commuter at Borabanda, said the lack of clearly visible boards indicating bus stops on various routes adds to the problem. “Many stops do not have prominent signs indicating that buses halt there. New passengers and senior citizens are often left guessing where they should stand. By the time they realise the bus is approaching, it is too late to reach the stopping point,” he said.
Passengers also pointed out that sudden changes in bus stop locations can lead to buses stopping at different points, creating confusion among both passengers and motorists.
Mohammed Ahmed, a resident of Old City, said “There should be a fixed and clearly marked location for every bus stop. If a stop has to be shifted because of traffic or road works, TGSRTC and traffic authorities should display advance notices and install visible signboards at the new location.”
Commuters urged the TGSRTC and traffic authorities to conduct a joint review of bus stops, particularly on busy arterial roads, and ensure that every designated stop has visible signage and adequate space for passengers.
