NGT notice to Telangana govt over Musi project
Hyderabad: In a setback to the Telangana government, the National Green Tribunal (Chennai) has issued notices to the State government over the Musi Rejuvenation project. The tribunal directed the government to furnish details of the environmental clearances obtained for the project, along with other project details. The tribunal posted the matter for the next hearing on October 16.
A group of retired engineers lodged a complaint with the Southern bench of the National Green Tribunal, challenging the environmental clearances issued by the Telangana government for the Musi project.
They pointed out that the Musi catchment area spans a total of 55 kilometres and the government assessed only a 20-kilometer stretch. The petitioners worried that the Mrugavani National Park, which is located in the river Musi region, would be disturbed from the Musi rejuvenation project.
The retired engineers also objected to the government's decision to undertake massive construction projects adjacent to the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs.
After reviewing the petition, the NGT Bench issued notices directing the government to immediately submit its arguments and relevant details regarding the issuance of environmental clearances and the project's implementation.
