Hyderabad: Residents of Shivarampally and Rajendranagar have alleged that excessive groundwater extraction by private water tanker operators, along with the alleged use of unauthorised borewells by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) tankers, has significantly depleted the groundwater table, leaving several domestic borewells in surrounding colonies completely dry.

According to residents, HMWSSB tankers have allegedly been drawing groundwater from unauthorised borewells near Pillar No. 248 in Golden City for the past few days, raising questions about why official water tankers are sourcing water from such locations. Javeed Patel, a resident of Golden City Colony, said that nearly three unauthorised water tanker operators near HF Convention Lane have been extracting groundwater for over a year despite repeated complaints from residents.

“The operators have dug borewells nearly 1,000 feet deep and are reportedly supplying water to tankers daily from the area. For the past few days, HMWSSB tankers have also been filling water from these borewells, raising questions about whether the water board has run out of water,” he said.

Residents have also taken to social media to question the alleged involvement of official HMWSSB tankers in sourcing water from unauthorised extraction points. “If tankers are supposed to fill water only from authorised centres, why are they filling water from illegal extraction units that are stealing the groundwater of our colonies and causing residential borewells to run dry? Instead of acting against such units, why are they being encouraged to extract more and more water?” a resident asked, urging HMWSSB authorities to intervene.

Residents further alleged that the three operators near HF Convention Lane have continued their activities without effective intervention. They said the continued extraction has raised concerns about the sustainability of groundwater resources and the impact on households dependent on borewells for their daily water needs.

They also submitted a complaint to the Rajendranagar Zonal Commissioner’s Office and the RDO, seeking immediate action against the violators.
