Hyderabad: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials arrested two persons after seizing foreign-origin gold valued at Rs 8.98 crore along the National Highway in Visakhapatnam. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers maintained strict vigil and intercepted a car travelling from Kolkata to Hyderabad after a lengthy highway chase.
Extensive searching and interrogation led to the discovery of a concealed cavity beneath the front co-passenger leg space. Officers recovered three packets containing 5,832.90 grams of 24-carat gold with 999 purity from the hidden compartment. Interrogations revealed that the gold was smuggled across the India-Bangladesh border for delivery to Hyderabad.
The contraband was seized under the Customs Act 1962, and both suspects were remanded in judicial custody after court presentation.
