Hyderabad: Ruling party MLC Vijayashanthi has criticised the Telangana government over the rising prices of rice and demanded immediate measures to provide relief to consumers.
Questioning the steep increase in rice prices, she said it was alarming that people were struggling to afford an essential food item in a state that produces substantial quantities of paddy.
Referring to the increase in retail prices, Vijayashanthi pointed out that the price of a 25-kg bag of rice, which was earlier around Rs 1,500, had reportedly increased to Rs.2,500. She also expressed concern over fine-quality rice being sold at Rs 85 to Rs100 per kg, placing an additional financial burden on ordinary households.
Questioning the Revanth Reddy-led government, she asked why it had failed to control the rising prices and what steps it was taking to protect consumers.
“How can people be unable to afford rice in a state where it is cultivated? Why has the price of a 25-kg bag increased by Rs 1,000? Where is the price control when fine-quality rice is being sold at Rs.100 per kg?” she asked.
