Karimnagar bar owners seek relief on tax, permit room issues
Karimnagar: A delegation of bar and restaurant owners from Karimnagar district met Telangana Prohibition and Excise Commissioner Chevvuru Hari Kishan, IAS, in Hyderabad on Monday and submitted a representation seeking resolution of key issues affecting the industry.
The delegation, led by Karimnagar District Bar and Restaurant Owners Association president Ponnala Tirupathi, general secretary Maddi Ramesh Goud, honorary president and State vice-president Bairam Padmaiah and others, raised concerns over permit rooms allegedly operating illegally or in violation of prescribed regulations near licensed bars. The representatives urged the Excise Department to strictly enforce rules and take appropriate action against violations. They also highlighted the financial difficulties faced by bar and restaurant owners due to taxes and increasing operational costs, saying the proposed privilege tax would add to their burden.
During the meeting, the Commissioner reportedly examined tax calculations and observed that bars faced a higher tax burden compared with liquor sold through wine shops. Hari Kishan assured the delegation that their concerns would be brought to the government’s notice and appropriate action would be considered. The representatives expressed hope for a favourable response within a week and thanked bar owners across Karimnagar for supporting the shutdown programme.
