DC inspects Govt polytechnic BC girls’ hostel following food poisoning incident

Wanaparthy: “Special attention must be paid to student health in government hostels; action will be taken against officials found negligent regarding health, food quality and hygiene of girl students in hostels,” said district collector Adarsh Surabhi on Friday.
Following an incident where girls fell ill at the BC girls’ hostel located on the premises of the Pebbair government polytechnic earlier this week, Surabhi visited the hostel to inspect. He spoke with students, inquiring about the quality of food, drinking water and the facilities provided. He questioned both officials and students regarding the causes of the illness.
In response, BC Welfare officials informed that 22 students had fallen ill; all had been admitted to hospital for treatment. Their condition is stable.
The collector noted that some students fell ill after consuming a meal containing chicken at the hostel on Wednesday night. He indicated that food contamination might have been the cause. The affected students were immediately shifted to hospital and provided treatment.
The condition of the girl students is stable. Appropriate action would be taken against those responsible for the incident following an inquiry.
He directed officials to immediately replace the filter in the water purification unit and to improve hygiene by clearing the accumulated garbage in the surrounding areas; officials must taste the food before it is served to the students and ensure its quality before allowing it to be distributed. Officials must not be negligent regarding the health, food quality, and hygiene of students.
He ordered them to ensure continuous monitoring to provide safe food, clean drinking water, and improved accommodation facilities for the students.
