Heavy rains disrupt normal life in erstwhile Khammam dist
Khammam: Heavy rains lashed several parts of the erstwhile Khammam district on Wednesday, disrupting normal life and affecting road connectivity and routine activities.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for very heavy rainfall in Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem, with the possibility of extremely heavy rain in parts of Telangana on September 24 and 25. Authorities have been advised to closely monitor low-lying and flood-prone areas, streams and vulnerable locations.
Several areas witnessed water-logging following the rains, while movement on roads was affected at some places. Officials have been put on alert and instructed to respond promptly to any emergency situation.
In Bhadradri Kothagudem district, authorities declared holidays for schools on September 23 and 24 in view of the heavy rainfall and weather warnings.
The persistent rain also affected coal mining operations of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), particularly open-cast mining activities where excavation depends on the movement of heavy earth-moving machinery.
Rainwater accumulation in mining areas can hamper the movement of dumpers, excavators and other equipment and temporarily slow down or suspend excavation until water is cleared.
Similar disruptions were reported at SCCL open-cast projects earlier this month, when incessant rains affected mining operations in Mancherial and Peddapalli and disrupted excavation of nearly 60,000 tonnes of coal a day across the affected projects.
The latest spell of rain comes at a time when Telangana is closely monitoring coal supplies to its thermal power stations. Political parties have also raised questions over coal availability and power generation, though those claims remain matters of political contention.
Singareni officials are expected to assess the situation at affected mines and take up dewatering and other restoration measures as weather conditions improve. Further rainfall over the next two days could continue to affect mining and transport operations in the region.
