Nelakondapalli stupa comes alive with international Buddhist festival
Khammam: An international Buddhist festival was held at the ancient Buddhist stupa in Nelakondapalli on Tuesday. The programme, organised under the guidance of Buddhist monk Siddha Rakkhita, witnessed the participation of 15 monks from different countries.
Special prayers and meditation sessions were conducted at the historic stupa, with participants praying for world peace and promoting the Buddhist principles of compassion, humanity and brotherhood.
Khammam District Collector Divakara, Telangana State Information Commissioner P V Srinivasa Rao, Telangana State Heritage Department Director Professor Dr Arjun Rao Kutandi, and naturopathy practitioner Dr Ramachandra Rao attended the event as chief guests.
The dignitaries highlighted the relevance of Buddhist philosophy in promoting peace, harmony and mutual understanding, besides emphasising the importance of protecting historical and cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, efforts are being considered to explore the development of Nelakondapalli’s Buddhist heritage site as part of a Buddhist tourism circuit. There is also a proposal to explore linking the site with the nearby Balasamudram tank to develop the area as an integrated tourism destination, according to information shared by the organisers.
The initiative, if taken forward, could help preserve the region’s historical legacy, raise awareness of its Buddhist heritage and enhance Nelakondapalli’s profile as a destination for domestic and international visitors.
The organisers expressed hope that such events would contribute to the promotion of Buddhist heritage and encourage tourism-related development in the region.
