Khammam: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to expedite irrigation projects, protect farmers’ lands, and prevent electricity-related accidents in oil palm plantations, informed a statement from the MLA’s Camp Office here on Saturday.

According to the statement, “In two letters submitted to the Chief Minister on Friday, Tummala proposed adopting a piped water distribution system wherever technically feasible under the Sitarama Lift Irrigation Scheme (SLIS) and introducing covered electricity conductors in oil palm-growing areas.”

The proposed changes to the Sitarama project could save approximately 9,767 acres of land and reduce land acquisition expenditure by an estimated Rs 2,148.74 crore, the minister said.

The project aims to provide irrigation to 3,28,853 acres of new ayacut and stabilise irrigation facilities across another 3,45,534 acres in six constituencies, benefiting a total of 6,74,387 acres.

According to Tummala, replacing open distribution canals with pipelines could reduce the land requirement from 11,162 acres to around 1,395 acres. He urged the government to store around one tmc ft of Godavari water temporarily at the Dummugudem barrage using sandbags, at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh. The minister requested early clearances for the Seethamma Sagar project to facilitate the commencement of works. He also invited the Chief Minister to inaugurate the Kallurigudem oil palm factory and Velugumatla housing model colony on December 9.
