Kurnool: The government should constitute a welfare board for auto workers and extend financial assistance to those depending on auto-rickshaw driving for their livelihood, AP Auto Motor Transport Workers Union State General Secretary A Eswar and AITUC district general secretary Nakki Lenin Babu demanded.

They were speaking at the district council meeting of the AP Auto Workers Union held at Indrajit Gupta Bhavan here on Sunday, with district president M Madhu presiding.

Eswar and Lenin Babu said many educated youth were driving auto-rickshaws to support their families without depending on the government. They alleged that the government had promised a welfare board before the elections but failed to implement it, demanding adequate fund allocation to extend welfare schemes through a single mechanism.

Highlighting that there are around 11.70 lakh auto workers in the State representing nearly 33 lakh votes, they urged authorities not to ignore their concerns. They also demanded an end to police harassment and heavy penalties for overloading and pollution certificate issues, while seeking interest-free bank loans for purchasing auto-rickshaws.

AITUC senior leader N Manohar Manikyam stated that workers could secure solutions only through sustained struggles, calling upon them to prepare for agitations against the coalition government’s anti-worker policies.
