Youth promotes clay Ganesha to protect environ
Mahabubnagar: A young man from Shivashakti Nagar, Srikanth Chary, has been promoting eco-friendly clay Ganesha idols as an alternative to Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols for the past 17 years.
Srikanth began making and promoting clay Ganesha idols in 2010, when he was pursuing his first year of BTech. Concerned over the water pollution caused by the immersion of PoP idols during Vinayaka Chavithi, he decided to encourage people to choose environmentally friendly clay idols.
He has been arranging hundreds of clay Ganesha idols every year with the help of skilled artisans from Kolkata. The initiative not only promotes environmental protection but also provides employment opportunities to traditional idol makers.
With the support of his brother Anil Chary, the clay idols are being sold near the Shivashakti Nagar Shiva Temple in Mahabubnagar, beside Sunkulamettu Temple in Gadwal and in Kalwakurthy. Despite working in the IT sector, Srikanth continues his environmental initiative every year. His efforts have received encouragement from youth and elders in the locality. “Celebrations should not come at the cost of nature. People should opt for clay Ganesha idols and avoid PoP idols and plastic materials to protect our water bodies and environment,” Srikanth Chary said. His 17-year-long effort has become a local environmental awareness initiative, inspiring people to celebrate Vinayaka Chavithi responsibly and in harmony with nature.
