Nellore: District Collector Himanshu Shukla has said that Vidya-Vasathi-Vikasam programme is being implemented with the spirit of former district Collector SR Sankaran. The Collector, Joint Collector Mogili Venkateswarlu and officials of various departments paid tributes to SR Sankaran on his death anniversary at SR Sankaran hall at the Collectorate here on Wednesday. They recalled his invaluable services rendered to the poor and downtrodden communities during his tenure in Nellore district.
Collector Shukla said Sankaran had earned a special place as an outstanding civil servant through his dedicated work for the welfare of the poor and underprivileged sections. He said Vidya-Vasathi-Vikasam programme should be taken forward on a larger scale, whose primary objective was to transform government hostels into model residential facilities by providing students with better accommodation, a conducive educational environment and essential amenities. The plan is to transform infrastructure and facilities in 155 government hostels across the district.
As part of this initiative, the Collector distributed 20 Sony Bravia 55-inch LED televisions, worth around Rs 11.50 lakh, to 20 government hostels in the district. The televisions were donated with the support of donors from industries department. Collector Shukla appealed to donors, industries and voluntary organisations to participate in Vidya-Vasathi-Vikasam programme and contribute to students’ welfare and development of government hostels. The cooperation of all sections of society was essential to provide better facilities to students staying in government hostels.
DRO Vijay Kumar, Industries Department GM Sridhar Babu, BC Welfare Officer Venkata Lakshmamma, SC Welfare Officer Shobharani, Tribal Welfare Officer Sujatha and others participated in the programme.
