Nellore: Speakers at an awareness program organized by the Women and Child Welfare Department at Mahila Pranganam called for collective action to eradicate child marriages across the district.

Held on Sunday to mark International Day of the Girl Child, the event brought together government officials, voluntary organizations, students, and grassroots healthcare workers.

Addressing the gathering, speakers appealed to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to play a vital role in ending child marriage, noting that curbing the social evil requires community collaboration beyond governmental efforts alone.

Mahila Pranganam Manager Madhavi stressed the need for targeted awareness among illiterate families who often encourage child marriages due to financial hardships and social pressures. Venkatachalam CDPO Vijayalakshmi stated that empowering girls through quality education, healthcare, proper nutrition, and equal opportunities is the most effective long-term solution to preventing early marriages.

Nellore Mandal Education Officer (MEO) Muralidhar urged young students to remain vigilant while navigating social media in the digital era, warning them against cybercrimes and online harassment.

He highlighted that October 11 is observed globally to promote girls’ rights, dignity, and gender equality.

As part of the observances, officials released an informative poster detailing various government welfare and development schemes designed for girl children.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Municipal High School students, Anganwadi workers, ICDS supervisors, ASHA personnel, and Child Helpline representatives, all reiterating their commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of girl children.
