Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released on Sunday, a day after Delhi Police detained them ahead of a planned demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The three leaders were detained from an Air India aircraft shortly after it landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday. They were subsequently taken for proceedings before an executive magistrate at Delhi Cantonment, according to the report.

Announcing their release, the party posted on its official X account: “Finally, Delhi Police is forced to release Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das. Cockroaches never die.”

CJP Leaders Detained Inside Air India Aircraft

The detention took place shortly after the flight arrived from Mumbai. Delhi Police personnel, including women officers, boarded the aircraft and approached the three leaders as passengers watched and recorded the incident on their mobile phones.

Videos circulating online showed Dipke confronting the officers and saying that he had travelled to Delhi prepared to be arrested.

The leaders were in the capital to participate in a planned CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. The demonstration was intended to demand Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.

Delhi Police had denied permission for the gathering, citing security and law-and-order concerns. The authorities subsequently stepped up security across the capital to prevent protesters from reaching the designated site.

Legal Team Tracks Proceedings

Ratna Singh, head of the CJP’s legal team, had earlier said that the three leaders were scheduled to be produced before an executive magistrate at Delhi Cantt Police Station at 9 am on Sunday.

Singh said she would be present at the police station with other lawyers representing the party.

The proceedings were also connected to preventive action, a legal action which aimed to prevent a potential offence or disturbance of public order. Section 126 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) provides for an executive magistrate to impose a peace bond on an individual in situations where the provisions of this act are applicable.

Section 170 of the BNSS separately provides for preventive arrest in specified circumstances where police believe a cognisable offence is being planned and that it cannot otherwise be prevented. Detention under that provision is generally limited to 24 hours unless further custody is authorised under another legal provision.

CJP Calls For Fresh Jantar Mantar Protest

Despite the detention of its senior leaders, the CJP called for another mobilisation at Jantar Mantar on Sunday morning.

The party said it would continue its agitation against Kumar, citing concerns over alleged manipulation of voter lists. The All India Students’ Association (AISA) had also called on supporters to join the protest.

The planned demonstration followed Saturday’s extensive security arrangements, with police blocking access to the protest site and imposing restrictions at several locations across Delhi.

Thousands Detained As Security Tightened Across Delhi

The original report says that over 3,000 were arrested in Delhi on Saturday as part of the Delhi Police preventive measures to halt the demonstration. The majority of the convicts were set free later in the day, and the three heads of the CJP were kept in preventive detention until Sunday.

There was reportedly an overall deployment of over 20,000 personnel of the police and Central Armed Police Forces across Delhi, around 6,500 of which were deployed in the area surrounding Jantar Mantar.

Multiple locations were used for setting up barricades, checkpoints and detention centres. The police also stepped up their monitoring and put restrictions on movements in parts of the capital.

The security operations that were carried out, had a negative impact on public transport, causing closure of several Metro stations and train services. The report also stated that mobile internet services were also suspended in a four-km radius of the Janpath-Kartavya Path area.

Metro entry and exit gates were reopened later on Saturday night, and interchange facilities were restored at the affected stations.

The release of the three CJP leaders marks a new development in the standoff over the proposed protest. The party has maintained that it will continue its campaign demanding Kumar’s resignation over alleged electoral-roll irregularities.

Always love to raise the unraised matter. In a world of worries, I am always ready to come over my comfort zone and taking the step ahead of spreading awareness.
