DSP transferred, 3 others shifted to police lines
Chandigarh: Amid mounting criticism from the opposition over the alleged custodial torture of a Sikh youth in Sangrur, the Punjab Police on Saturday transferred a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and shifted three other officers, including an inspector, to police lines.
The action came after the victim, Mohanjit Singh of Sheron village, alleged that police in Sunam division tortured him after being detained for waving a black flag from the rooftop of a house near the venue of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s ‘Lok Milni’ programme on September 2.
He claimed that he was raising slogans against the AAP government’s alleged failure to curb the drug menace. Singh further claimed that, under police custody, he was given an electric shock, his beard was pulled, salt was rubbed on his wounds, and his undergarment was torn.
According to the official order, Harvinder Singh has now been posted as DSP, First Commando Battalion, Bahadurgarh, in Patiala on administrative grounds with immediate effect.
Whereas, Inspector Parteek Jindal, the Station House Officer of Sunam police station, Sub-Inspector Baljit Singh, the SHO of Cheema police station, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Harpreet Singh have been shifted to Sangrur Police Line. On Friday, several opposition parties met Singh at a local hospital, where he was undergoing treatment after the alleged torture. Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring lashed out at Bhagwant Mann and equated him to the invader and Afghan emperor Ahmed Shah Abdali.
Warring also wrote to the National Human Rights Commission urging it to investigate the alleged torture of the youth. Punjab BJP chief Kewal Singh Dhillon also spoke to Singh over a video call and demanded an impartial investigation into the incident.
