Nana Patekar’s legacy continues to resonate in Mundkur
Udupi: The passing of veteran actor Nana Patekar has brought back memories of his close association with Mundkur in Karkala taluk, where residents remember him for his generosity and contributions to religious and educational institutions.
Patekar had visited Mundkur frequently nearly two-and-a-half decades ago and maintained a friendship with local businessman and philanthropist Gurupasad Sudhakar Shetty of Mulladka. During his visits, he became closely associated with several community initiatives in the region. One of his notable contributions was towards the renovation and Brahmakalashotsava of the historic Mundkur Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple. His financial assistance helped support the temple’s development, and a community hall built with his contribution was later named the Nana Patekar Sabhagraha.
The hall, estimated to be worth around Rs 1 crore, continues to stand as a reminder of the actor’s association with the village and his willingness to support local causes.Patekar also extended assistance to religious activities at the Brahma Baidarkala Garadi in Mulladka and the Kaje Sri Mahammayi Temple in Mundkur.
His philanthropic interests extended to education as well. He supported the 60th anniversary celebrations of Mundkur’s century-old Government Higher Primary School. He also contributed to the construction of a library and computer room at Mundkur Vidyavardhaka Pre-University College and donated computers for students.
Patekar had expressed his desire to see a Gurukula-style education system introduced in Mundkur, reflecting his interest in strengthening traditional and modern approaches to learning. For Mundkur residents, his legacy extends beyond cinema. His financial contributions, friendships and involvement in local causes have ensured that memories of the actor remain closely linked with the village. Residents say the institutions he supported will continue to remind future generations of the role Patekar played in Mundkur’s community development.
