No patient should buy medicines from outside: Minister Pankaj

New Delhi: Delhi Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh on Wednesday directed G.B. Pant Hospital to ensure 100 per cent availability of essential medicines, saying patients should not be forced to purchase prescribed drugs from outside due to shortages. During a surprise inspection, Singh visited wards, the pharmacy and medicine storage facilities and interacted with patients, attendants, doctors and hospital staff.

Officials informed the Minister that around 95-97 per cent of medicines were available at the hospital. Singh directed the administration to immediately address the remaining gap and replenish stocks before they reach critical levels.

“There should be no shortage of essential medicines in the hospital,” Singh said, adding that patients must receive medicines when required without inconvenience.

The minister also conducted random checks of medicine stocks. Officials told him that when a particular brand was unavailable, alternatives manufactured by other companies with the same composition were generally available.

Singh asked doctors and pharmacists to improve coordination and ensure patients are informed about suitable alternatives.
