OMC achieves world record with massive 1-hour waste segregation drive

Ongole: The Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC) earned a place in the World Book of Records on Saturday by organising a city-wide waste segregation drive completed across the entire town within one hour.

The initiative formed part of celebrations marking 150 years of Ongole Municipality. World Book of Records representatives presented the official certificate and commemorative plaque to Municipal Commissioner T Venkata Krishnaiah. Prakasam district Collector P Raja Babu, MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao and other public representatives joined the mega drive that covered all localities in the morning.

Collector Raja Babu noted that several programmes over the past three months have highlighted the municipality’s 150-year history. Around 81,000 households received bags to separate wet and dry waste, with the goal of keeping the town clean under the slogan ‘Mana Ongole, Mana Gauravam.’

MP Srinivasulu Reddy expressed happiness at the festival-like celebrations and appreciated women’s active participation, while noting that waste is being converted into electricity. He urged citizens to attend events on September 28–30. MLA Janardhana Rao said about 150 medical camps held in the past three months provided free services, and the drive has boosted awareness of waste segregation.
