Rajamahendravaram: Flood watershave inundated several villages and thousands of acres of agricultural land in Tallapudi mandal of East Godavari district following heavy rains triggered by the cyclone. Kovvada witnessed a heavy inflow of floodwater over the past two days, leaving several villages and agricultural fields under water.

Paddy fields in Bayyavaram, Ragolapalli, Tupakulagudem, Pochavaram, Tadipudi, Gajjiram, Annadevarapeta, Tirugudemetta, Peddevam, Malakapalli and Vegeswarapuram have been submerged. Farmers are worried as thousands of acres of paddy crops, which were expected to be harvested in another ten days, have been damaged. Water has also entered elevated agricultural lands, while heavy silt deposits are raising fears of crop rot. Tenant farmers are particularly distressed over the losses.

Apart from paddy, pulses, banana, coconut, cocoa and sugarcane crops have also been affected. Submergence of grazing lands has created a shortage of fodder for cattle. Floodwater flowing across roads connecting Tadipudi with Pochavaram, Annadevarapeta with Gopalapuram, Tirugudemetta with Peddevam and Malakapalli with Tirugudemetta has disrupted road connectivity.

Meanwhile, the overflowing Yerrakalava canal has inundated several localities in Nidadavole town and villages in the surrounding mandal. Singavaram and Tallapalem were affected after a breach occurred near the Tandalamma temple at Singavaram. Kamsalapalem and Chittipeta villages were also inundated. In Nidadavole town, Gandhi Nagar, Subbarajupeta, Tirugudem and Indira Nagar were among the affected localities.

Rehabilitation centres have been established for families displaced by the floods. State Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh visited the affected areas and instructed officials to take necessary measures to minimise public inconvenience and provide relief to the victims.

Officials have stopped the release of water from the Yerrakalava Reservoir at Konguvarigudem. The stoppage of the discharge is expected to gradually reduce the flood situation in the affected areas.
