Murasu wreaks havoc in Godavari districts
Rajamahendravaram: Cyclone Murasu has triggered widespread heavy rainfall across the Godavari districts, disrupting normal life, inundating roads and agricultural fields and affecting connectivity in several low-lying and agency areas. Rajamahendravaram, Kakinada, Yanam, Eluru, Nidadavole, Amalapuram, Bhimavaram, Eluru and Tadepalligudem were among the places that experienced continuous downpour, leaving several roads resembling ponds and creating difficulties for commuters and residents.
The situation remained particularly serious in the agency and upland areas of Eluru and Polavaram, where heavy inflows into hill streams, canals and rivulets disrupted road connectivity to some villages. Bhadrachalam and other upper catchment areas also witnessed heavy rainfall, increasing the possibility of flood inflows into local streams and reservoirs.
In view of the possibility of floodwater entering through the Pedavagu, the State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) issued a flood warning for Velerupadu mandal in Eluru district on Wednesday. APSDMA Managing Director and RTGS CEO Prakhar Jain urged people living in low-lying and flood-prone villages to remain alert and immediately move to safer locations. He cautioned people against crossing overflowing streams, canals and roads and advised them to take precautions against sudden floods caused by heavy rainfall.
In Buttayagudem and Jangareddygudem mandals, incessant rain continued to lash the agency and upland areas. Several hill streams and small canals were overflowing, cutting off road access to some villages. The police issued an alert advising residents not to venture out unnecessarily and avoid travelling on roads covered by floodwater. They particularly cautioned motorists against attempting to cross overflowing streams and urged parents to keep children and elderly people away from canals, tanks and waterlogged areas.
The Gubbalamangamma Jalleru reservoir in Buttayagudem mandal received heavy inflows from its upper catchment areas, bringing the water level close to its full reservoir level. According to Water Resources Department Assistant Executive Engineer Suresh, the reservoir has a capacity of 217.80 metres and recorded a water level of 216.60 metres by Wednesday morning.
