Tirupati MP Dr Maddila Gurumurthy and MLC Cipai Subramanyam arguing with police officials after being blocked by opposing party workers outside the Municipal Corporation office on Saturday
Tirupati: Tensions escalated in Tirupati on Saturday as YSRCP MP Dr Maddila Gurumurthy launched a sharp attack on the police department, alleging severe security lapses and bias during the local body election nomination filing process at the Municipal Corporation office.
MP Gurumurthy, accompanied by YSRCP MLC Cipai Subramanyam, arrived at the venue to submit nomination papers on behalf of the party’s mayoral candidate, Vasu Yadav.
However, the leaders were reportedly blocked by a large crowd of TDP workers and leaders who had gathered at the nomination center.
Expressing deep anguish, Dr Gurumurthy alleged that the police failed in their fundamental duty by remaining silent spectators while opposition workers obstructed public representatives.
He stated that TDP activists forcibly snatched the nomination papers right as he was presenting them to police officials. The MP also questioned the rationale of law enforcement officers who insisted that he show his government identification and prove his authorization to file nominations.
Terming the incident a direct assault on democratic norms, Dr Gurumurthy emphasized that preventing elected representatives from participating in the electoral process undermines democratic principles.
He alleged that the police force was functioning under ruling party pressure rather than acting independently.
Demanding immediate intervention from election authorities, the MP urged officials to guarantee a safe, level playing field for all political parties and instruct the police to maintain strict impartiality, ensuring every candidate can submit their nominations without fear or obstruction.
