Tirumala: The traditional Chatra Sthapana, or Golden Umbrella Ceremony, was held at the Main Kalyana Katta in Tirumala on Monday evening as part of the ongoing Tirumala Srivari Salakatla Brahmotsavams, preceding the grand Rathotsavam scheduled for Tuesday.
The age-old custom is performed on the eve of the chariot festival under the direct supervision of Kalyana Katta staff.
According to historical records, this sacred tradition has been upheld for centuries by the descendants of Pantulugari in accordance with a Dharmashasanam issued by Chandragiri ruler Sri Srinivasa Mahadeva Rayalu during the era of Sri Krishnadevaraya. The formal offering of the golden umbrella has continued uninterrupted since 1952.
The ceremonial proceedings were led by Pantulugari descendant Sri Pantulugari Ramanathan.
TTD Additional Executive Officer Ch Venkaiah Chowdary, State Nai Brahmin Corporation Chairman Rudrakoti Sadashivam, Kalyana Katta Deputy EO Ramakanth, Superintendents Janakiram and Sudhakar Reddy, alongside other temple officials and staff, participated with deep devotion.
The ritual marks a significant milestone in the annual Brahmotsavam calendar, celebrating rich historical ties and religious heritage as thousands of pilgrims converge on the holy hills for the ensuing Rathotsavam celebrations.
