AP Congress to contest all local body elections

The Andhra Pradesh Congress Political Affairs Committee announced plans to contest all upcoming urban and rural local body elections, forming a committee to discuss potential alliances with INDIA bloc parties.

The Andhra Pradesh Congress will contest the forthcoming local body elections in all urban and rural local bodies, including Mandal Parishads (MPTCs), Zilla Parishads (ZPTCs) and Gram Panchayats, party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) decided at its first meeting held at Andhra Ratna Bhavan, the Congress party’s State office, in Vijayawada on Saturday. The meeting was chaired by AICC in-charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs and MLC P V Mohan and continued for about four hours.
CWC members Gidugu Rudra Raju and N Raghuveera Reddy, AICC member Koppula Raju, former Union Ministers MM Pallam Raju, Killi Kriparani and JD Seelam, APCC working presidents N Tulasi Reddy and Mastan Vali, Vice-President Kolanukonda Sivaji and other senior leaders participated in the meeting. APCC president YS Sharmila Reddy attended the meeting virtually.
The PAC discussed preparations for local body elections and reviewed various political and organisational issues. It decided to constitute a three-member committee to hold discussions and finalise possible alliances with INDIA parties, like-minded parties and organisations opposed to the BJP and NDA.
The meeting also decided to review the formation of District Congress Committees and the appointment of Assembly coordinators, Mandal presidents and Mandal Congress Committees. PAC discussed caste census and socio-economic survey of Backward Classes. The party decided to widely propagate its stand that a socio-economic survey of OBCs should be conducted as part of the ongoing caste census, with a separate OBC column and distinct code in the prescribed format.
Other issues discussed included Congress’s allegations of corruption in TDP and YSRCP regimes relating to mines, liquor, sand, land and ration rice. The implementation of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, including Special Category Status, drought situation and farmers’ issues were also discussed.
The PAC resolved to hold its meetings once every three months. The PCC Executive Committee and extended PCC meetings will also be held at three-month intervals.
