APPCB to ensure clean, safe Godavari Pushkaralu
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) chairman Dr P Krishnaiah directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to ensure water quality, sanitation and pollution control at the Godavari bathing ghats during the Godavari Pushkaralu–2027.
Speaking at a meeting held at the APPCB head office here on Wednesday to review arrangements for the forthcoming Pushkarams, Krishnaiah said a large number of devotees were expected to visit the Godavari from different parts of the state.
He directed officials to put in place a system for continuous monitoring of water quality at the Pushkar bathing ghats. Key water quality parameters at the ghats in East and West Godavari districts should be identified in advance, and a robust plan should be prepared for collecting and testing water samples at regular intervals before, during and after the Pushkaralu, he said.
Krishnaiah stressed the need for special attention to sanitation, waste management and pollution control at the bathing ghats. He called for advance measures in coordination with the departments concerned to provide devotees with a clean, safe and convenient environment.
The chairman also directed officials to formulate a comprehensive action plan under the aegis of the APPCB for the protection of rivers, lakes, canals, ponds and other water bodies across the state.
He emphasised the need to prevent water pollution at the Pushkar ghats and protect the Godavari through environment-friendly practices. Water quality standards should be monitored continuously to ensure the safety of devotees taking holy baths, he said.
Krishnaiah said the APPCB should effectively discharge its responsibility to ensure that the Godavari Pushkaralu are conducted in a clean, safe and environment-friendly manner.
APPCB member secretary S Saravanan, joint chief environmental engineer M Rajasekhar, joint chief environmental scientist Sriranjani and other officials attended the meeting.
