Markapur: CPI National Control Commission Chairman Dr K Narayana demanded that the government install a statue of CPI leader Pula Subbaiah at the Veligonda Project site.
Dr Narayana visited feeder canal at Gantavanipalli village in Dornala mandal on Monday. Speaking at a press meet at the Press Club in Markapur, Narayana said that the completion of Phase 1 of Pula Subbaiah Veligonda Project and the release of Krishna waters into it is a welcome development.
He congratulated the coalition government on this achievement.
He recalled that in the 1980s, when the then Chief Minister NT Rama Rao visited Markapur, a CPI delegation led by Pula Subbaiah explained the importance of the project and the region’s drought conditions to him.
Following Subbaiah’s sustained agitations, NT Rama Rao officially issued a GO for a survey of the project.
He further said that the credit for achieving Veligonda Project belongs entirely to the Communist Party of India. He appreciated the roles played by NT Rama Rao, Chandrababu Naidu, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy, and Jaganmohan Reddy in completing the project.
He urged the government to speed up Phase 2 works. Once completed, the project will bring water to 32 mandals across erstwhile Prakasam, Nellore, and Kadapa districts and provide drinking water to 20 lakh people, he said.
CPI National Executive Member Muppalla Nageswara Rao demanded that the government immediately sanction pending rehabilitation packages to displaced families.
District CPI Secretary ML Narayana, AP Rythu Sangham general secretary KVV Prasad, CPI state council members Syed Yasin, KV Krishna Goud, district general secretary Devandla Srinivas, Ande Nasaraiah and others participated in the programme.
