Elaborate arrangements made for SARAS Mela

Vijayawada: NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha said the district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the national-level Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society (SARAS) Aajeevika Mela to be held at Punnami Ghat in Vijayawada from October 13 to 31.
The Collector, accompanied by Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) Chief Executive Officer Vakati Karuna, Union Ministry of Rural Development NRLM Director Dr Molishree and Joint Collector S Ilakkiya, inspected the arrangements at Punnami Ghat on Thursday.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Dr Lakshmisha said up to 600 stalls would be set up by participants from across the country, providing a common platform for women members of self-help groups to showcase and sell their products.
He said the Central and State governments were organising the event to promote handicrafts, handloom products and rural artisans. Products reflecting the culture, traditions, traditional arts and rural lifestyles of different States would be showcased at the mela, he added. The Collector appealed to people from Vijayawada and NTR district, as well as visitors to the city, to visit the mela in large numbers and encourage products made by women members of self-help groups from different States.
He said President Droupadi Murmu and prominent personalities from various States were expected to attend the event. The mela would provide artisans and self-help groups an opportunity to reach wider markets and promote their traditional products, he added.
Dr Lakshmisha said the Dasara festivities of Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam, Vijayawada Utsav and the SARAS Aajeevika Mela would be held simultaneously.
The district administration was making arrangements accordingly, he said, adding that elected representatives and officials were working together to ensure the successful conduct of all three major events.
