Vijayawada: Heavy rains lashed several parts of the State on Saturday following the formation of a low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting normal life in several districts. Several places received heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging on roads and affecting vehicular movement.
In NTR district, Tiruvuru, Vijayawada North, Vatsavai, Vijayawada Central, Gampalagudem, Vijayawada East, Vijayawada West, Vijayawada Rural and Ibrahimpatnam mandals received heavy rainfall. Tiruvuru recorded highest rainfall of 37.60 mm, followed by Vijayawada North with 26.10 mm. Gunadala in Vijayawada North received 48 mm of rainfall during morning, while mandal’s overall rainfall was recorded at 26.10 mm.
Vatsavai recorded 19.5 mm, Vijayawada Central 13.30 mm, Gampalagudem 12.40 mm, Vijayawada East 7.2 mm, Vijayawada West 6 mm, Vijayawada Rural 5.8 mm and Ibrahimpatnam 3.6 mm.
Vijayawada witnessed heavy rainfall, with rainwater inundating several busy localities, including Benz Circle, Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road, Governorpet, Gunadala, KR Market, One Town and Patamata. Rainwater accumulated to knee-deep levels at some stretches, leaving cars and two-wheelers stranded on major roads. On the directions of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner HM Dhyanachandra, zonal commissioners, department heads and engineering and sanitation staff inspected waterlogged areas and took steps to clear the accumulated water. With the help of Airtech machines, officials removed stagnated water at several areas quickly, preventing inconvenience to people.
Meanwhile, several parts of neighbouring Krishna district also received heavy rainfall. Nagayalanka recorded highest rainfall of 26 mm, followed by Nandivada 12.4 mm, Unguturu 9.4 mm, Pamidimukkala 7.5 mm, Koduru 4.4 mm, Vuyyuru 3.8 mm and Thotlavalluru 3 mm. At 5 pm, Nandamuru in Unguturu mandal received 49 mm, Polukonda in Nandivada 38.5 mm, Gannavaram 24 mm and Kruthivennu 22.75 mm. The sudden downpour brought relief from the prolonged dry spell but also caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several urban and rural areas. Officials advised people in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert as more rainfall is expected.
