Informed citizens essential for strong democracy
Vijayawada: Dr BV Muralidhar, Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at SV University, Tirupati, stressed the need for informed and responsible citizens to safeguard democratic institutions and values.
Addressing a programme organised by the Department of Political Science at Andhra Loyola College (Autonomous) here on Tuesday to mark International Day of Democracy, Dr Muralidhar said active participation of young people was essential for strengthening democratic societies.
Principal of Andhra Loyola College Fr Dr S Melchior said students should understand and uphold the true spirit of democracy. Referring to Abraham Lincoln’s definition of democracy as government “of the people, by the people, for the people,” he stressed the importance of freedom, equality, justice, constitutional awareness and responsible participation, particularly among the younger generation.
Dr Poornima Ravinathan, Head of the Department of Political Science, coordinated the programme and highlighted the department’s efforts to promote political awareness and democratic consciousness among students. Dr A Samuel Dayakar, Senior Faculty, Department of Political Science, Dr B Baby Rani, Dean, Humanities, and Dr Movva Sreenivasa Reddy, Head of the Department of History, were present.
