Vijayawada: India must prioritise national security, digital sovereignty and strategic interests while considering approvals for satellite broadband operators, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, said Dr Dileep Kilaru, BJP Andhra Pradesh State Media In-charge and author of Bharat Rising in the Modi Era. He said in a statement here on Friday that satellite broadband could expand connectivity in remote villages, border regions and underserved areas, but technological advancement must not compromise the security of critical communication infrastructure. Kilaru said that India has more than a billion internet users and offers some of the world’s most affordable high-speed internet services. He observed that Starlink’s comparatively higher prices could limit its accessibility to ordinary consumers.
Describing satellite communications as strategically important infrastructure, he stressed the need for stringent verification of data security, Indian gateway infrastructure, lawful interception capabilities, data localisation requirements and compliance with national security directives.
He said Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb, backed by Bharti, and Jio Satellite Communications should be assessed under uniform regulatory standards. No company should receive preferential treatment because of its international influence or financial strength.
Kilaru added that security assessments must be rigorous, while applicants meeting all requirements should receive decisions within clearly defined timelines. Indefinite regulatory delays should not obstruct legitimate business operations.
