Vijayawada: Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana said the government was taking steps to strengthen Vijayawada’s stormwater drainage system with an estimated investment of Rs 600 crore to prevent waterlogging during heavy rains.

After the rains receded, Minister Narayana inspected desilting works being carried out at an outfall drain near Nirmala Convent signals service road in Vijayawada on Saturday evening.

He said the proposed stormwater drainage works were aimed at providing a permanent solution to the city’s drainage problems and ensuring the smooth disposal of rainwater.

Narayana said desilting works were being taken up using 70 machines across the city from Saturday morning as heavy silt accumulation in several drains were obstructing free flow of water and contributing to waterlogging.

He directed officials to work in coordination and closely monitor drain cleaning and water drainage arrangements to ensure that residents faced no inconvenience.

Engineer-in-Chief Prabhakar, in-charge Commissioner A Ravindra Rao, CE P Satyakumari, Chief Medical Health Officer Dr Nirmala Glory, Zonal Commissioner K Shammi, Assistant Medical Health Officer Dr Annapurna and other officials accompanied him.
