Vijayawada: With the notification for elections to Municipal Corporations, Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats expected in the first week of October, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has intensified preparations for the smooth conduct of the civic polls.
The VMC has completed the preparation of final electoral rolls for all 86 divisions and finalised 848 polling stations. The number of divisions was increased from 64 to 86 following the recent delimitation. According to the final electoral rolls, the VMC has 8,05,797 voters, including 3,94,397 men, 4,11,294 women and 106 voters under the Others category. The civic body has also completed the identification of SC, ST, BC and women voters division-wise for the purpose of reservation of seats as per the prescribed norms.
Meanwhile, officials are making arrangements to provide the required election material, stationery and other supplies at the offices of Returning Officers. The necessary stationery is being readied at the Council Hall building of the VMC. Officials have also procured boxes for safely storing nomination papers and other election-related documents. After the election notification is issued, the boxes will be sent to the respective divisional election offices.
The deadline for receiving claims and objections on the draft division-wise lists of SC, ST, BC and women voters ended on Monday. One objection was received from former corporator Hanumantha Rao regarding the 57th division, alleging that the number of BC voters was shown higher than SC voters in the draft list despite the latter being higher. Officials will examine the objection and take further action as per the rules.
The authorities said that the deadline for receiving objections and suggestions on the draft list of polling stations for the 2026 general elections in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) limits ended on September 26, while the officials examined the objections and suggestions on September 27.
After considering the objections and suggestions, the final list of polling stations will be made available for public inspection from September 28 (Monday) at the VMC headquarters, zonal offices, NTR District Collectorate, RDO office, and tahsildar offices.
